Winner of the 2008 Song of the Year sponsored by West Coast Songwriters for her haunting ballad Mirabelle, Karen is also a recipient of the 2009 and 2010 Music Connection Top 100 Artists, 2009 Best of Los Angeles Women in MusicAward, a winner of the 2006 Barry Manilow /Concord Records Award for lyric writing, winner of Best Song 2006 by Los Angeles Songwriter’s Co-op and she is a 3 time winner of Best Performer by West Coast Songwriters. Karen has been honored with 3 world premiers of her music at the Los Angeles Music Center, and her songs for motion pictures have been singled out by Variety, People Magazine and the Los Angeles Times.
In a wide ranging career, you have heard Karen’s singing voice in numerous motion pictures, as well as dozens of TV and radio spots: Karen is the singing voice of Sigourney Weaver in the Showtime movie Snow White, she wrote all of the songs for the Divine cult classic Lust In The Dust, and she has performed on numerous occasions with the Los Angeles Symphony and the Los Angeles Master Chorale.
Karen’s award winning choral music is performed and recorded worldwide. Last December, eight major U.S. cities and three countries worldwide, performed Karen’s unique choral work Judah and His Maccabees: A Hanukkah Gospel Story.
This September marked Karen’s return to Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. as she joined the Los Angeles Master Chorale for their 50th Anniversary celebration.
In December, the Cary Performing Arts Center in Raleigh, North Carolina welcomed Karen as their featured composer in three concerts. For their 2013 holiday concert series, Karen and her music were featured, accompanied by the 125 voice Concert Singers of Cary with the 30 piece Triangle Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Lawrence Speakman. She was also joined by her very special guest, Nashville’s critically acclaimed Michael Kelsh. The program included the world premiere of three new compositions, as well as a very special tribute to Libby Brown Whaley.
From the U.S. to England, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Australia, Karen has sung at the Vatican for Pope John Paul II and opened for Stevie Wonder. She was the sole musical guest at the 2004 inauguration of the Steve Allen Theatre in Hollywood. The Second Annual Beverly Hills International Chamber Music Festival honored Karen by featuring one of her compositions as the finale of their 2005 concert series, where she was accompanied by an orchestra of child prodigies from around the world.
Karen’s mini-musical The Life and Times of Mirabelle is built around her 2008 award winning Song of the Year, “Mirabelle.” Bringing Mirabelle to the stage, Karen chronicles the adventures, setbacks and triumphs of the endearing Mirabelle through her life’s journeys – from teenage years to marriage, raising a family, and ultimately into Mirabelle’s golden years. Narrated by ABC’s Nashville star Charles Esten (Deacon Claybourne), this collection of multiple award winning songs is the perfect foundation for the story of the Life and Times of Mirabelle.
Karen’s charitable work for the Veteran’s Hospital in Los Angeles remain her most treasured musical activity. Performing monthly in the hospital wards for the vets who are unable to leave their beds, she receives continued inspiration. Songs from her latest CD release ‘Cause Life’s Too Short , are inspired by these visits.
At the Magic Town Music Festival this year, Karen, together with her band BIG YELLOW TAXI, will be performing a tribute set to her hero Joni Mitchell.
